I'm not a fruit eater. It's not that I don't like fruit because I do. But there are a couple of compounded reasons why I don't prefer to eat fruit:
- I tend to avoid foods that require removal of sections that you can't consume. Example: skinless chicken breasts instead of chicken on the bone. Obviously, fruits fit this category. I'll eat grapes and bananas because it's easy to remove the inedible parts. Oranges though, are a pain.
- I appear to be allergic to certain fruits. My throat will itch like crazy. Not sure if it's the skin or what. Fresh peaches are a killer. Cherries can hurt. Even apples will often cause irritation.
- I like food that is fairly uniform. Fruit always tends to have areas that are bruised, broken, or whatever. This ultimately refers back to the point about separating edible from inedible.
Given all of this I am pretty psyched about a product that I just discovered, Del-Monte Fruit Naturals. I'm not sure how long they've been on the market, but I just found them and they are fantastic. Essentially they are simply chunks of fruit in a transparent, refrigerated container. They address all of my negatives of eating fruit.

The fact that they are refrigerated versus canned gives me the feeling that they are fresh. Whether or not this is an illusion doesn't really matter to me. It just works. The transparent container lets me see exactly what I'm buying. I can check the quality of the fruit before I pay for it. I have yet to come across a single piece that was not pristine. And the best part of the fruit has already been separated from anything inedible. Everything in the container is uniform.
To me, all of this is worth paying for. I can now enjoy peaches and grapefruit whereas previously I could not.
Obvious drawbacks are the typical things that make me feel guilty about living in the modern Western world... plastic, wasteful (though efficient) packaging, excessive cost when compared to whole fruit, not as much nutritional value as eating whole fruit.
