How to uninstall Magic Jack from your PC

Even though the Magic Jack Terms of Service refers to an uninstall option within Add/Remove programs, you will find that it does not exist. Stuff like this frustrates me to no end and makes me instantly and irrevocably suspicious. Programs and devices that do not provide a user-friendly method for removal project an attitude of laziness, disrespect, and fly-by-night onto the company that provides them.

Here is what to do if you want to remove MagicJack from your computer forever. I assume you are running Windows XP.

1) Unplug the Magic Jack device from your computer. This should remove the virtual devices that MagicJack installs:

  1. Disk Drive: YMax MagicJack USB Device
  2. CD Drive: YMax MagicJack USB Device
  3. USB: TigerJet USB Composite Device
  4. USB: Generic USB Hub
  5. USB: USB Mass Storage Device
Don't ever plug it back in again.

2) Delete the "mjusbsp" directory from the following location: C:\Documents and Settings\[YourUserProfileName]\Application Data

3) Delete any MagicJack directories from the following location: C:\Documents and Settings\[YourUserProfileName]\Local Settings\Application Data

4) Delete any desktop icons

5a) Clean up your registry using a registry cleaning tool. I highly recommend TuneUp Utilities 2008. Among many other features, it will keep your registry sparkling clean.

5b) Clean up your registry manually. Use regedit to locate the HKEY Current User > Talk4Free entries and Delete the Talk4Free Key and all Subkeys.

6) Reboot and you should be all set.

** UPDATES ** - mostly from user posting in the comments

How to uninstall from Windows Vista:

"To uninstall from vista, simply go to the search bar and look up "mjusbsp". Right click and open explorer. Delete whole folder. Use CCleaner (free) to clean rest up. That easy. Vista isn't perfect, but things like the search function rock."

Miguel's Gravatar MagicJack still has a way to go to be a viable telephony solution. Why they don't have an uninstaller is beyond me!

IgniteMe's Gravatar I found an additional registry key that I'm fairly confident is associated with MagicJackoff - ;-) -

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Tiger Jet Network, Inc.

They're jackoffs because they charged my debit card 25 days into the 30 day trial period - bouncing two checks in the process... Yes I know it's a no-no giving out debit card #'s on the internet - but a $1.2 million dollar heart attack - 2month coma wiped out my credit as well as my health (mold from a water leak shut down my liver! JEEZE! WRONG LOTTERY! THANKS JEEBUS!) Anyway - back to the point... Not only did they break their contract with me - they are dragging their heels in giving me a refund number - probably hoping they can say that I went over their 30 days trial period by not returning their product in a timely fashion. I'm at 31 days as of this post... And they still have yet to give me my refund number. I had to go through the hassle of disputing this directly with my bank... PAIN IN THE ARSE!!! Besides all that - most everyone I called received a wicked echo or couldn't hear me unless I was shouting... I was going to cancel in due course anyway.

Hey MagicJackOffs - Your product and customer service sucks the big one! Get a life!!!

IgniteMe's Gravatar One last thing to say... MagicJackOff would not give me the local area code that I live in - How much you wanna bet they make money off all the local folks that have to call me long distance?! And just in case anyone is wondering - YES - I tried all of their "fixes" from their website to improve the call quality - To no avail...

Hasta la fuego, MajicJackOffs - POS!
# Posted By IgniteMe | 4/3/08 1:59 PM
IgniteMe's Gravatar Oh JEEBUS! I can't stop!!! I forgot one last thing... When I first installed this crapware - I found !!! THIRTEEN !!! different applications associated with it in my ZoneAlarm firewall programs menu... I was able to disable nine of these - but four of these "services" had to be enabled for this POS to work - three too many for my taste! And they were all named with obfuscating names like "in00000" & such... Do NOT trust MAGICJACKOFF!!!

Michael's Gravatar Stupid to believe in MJ BS, tried it out, worked so and so for first six weeks, after than nothing but problems getting calls out, coming in and voicemail that did not work. Spent over 5 hours on their BS customer service, they have all this phone technology but no way for you to phone them.

After six tries with nothing but BS, wouldn't give me someone else who could help, no supervisors available, no phone to call...really bad PR in my mind, end result, after all the BS then their only answer was that they are doing upgrades.

Upgrades for two weeks, into the third week and still not functioning. Past 30 days so no money back and DON'T CALL after 5:00...you get Ahmid and Shid who don't do anything including trying a sentence so you can read.

If you think you want this, save your money...it doesn't work and they don't care.

mark's Gravatar I found one more directory, maybe it was from a newer version...

Delete the ".magicfix" directory from the following location: C:\Documents and Settings\[YourUserProfileName]\

Thanks!

You can not call them u only have to use their CHAT online. After talking to them for over 2 hours of uninstalling, Reinstalling, Cleaning the Registry, Rebooting, Trying on another PC Nothing worked. I do receive calls, i can make call to cretin number but allot of LOCAL number don't work. According to Magic Jack I am Dialing the Wrong number??and maybe the other party is using the phone bullshit.

I checked online and saw other people had the same problems.

Miguel's Gravatar Go to the BBB in West Palm Beach and so a search for magicJack. I see they're running 30 minute informercials now; I hope consumers do their research before buying this junk.
# Posted By Miguel | 4/23/08 12:13 PM
mike's Gravatar I've had my magicJack for 3 weeks now and it works fine. What am I doing wrong?

Seriously, it's the comments about magicJack going bad after a few months that scare me. I'm bookmarking this web site just in case....
# Posted By mike | 4/24/08 4:41 PM
Miguel's Gravatar Mike, since you've only had it for a few weeks send it back for your full refund! Just be absolutely certain to buy "delivery confirmation" from the USPS. Don't wait till you need support and try using their "chat" system that's a nightmare. Do a search on Google and you'll see the countless stories on MJ.
# Posted By Miguel | 4/24/08 4:48 PM
Bob Williams's Gravatar Miguel said to check out the West Palm Beach website to get some information on this product. I did, and nothing showed up. What's the deal, Miguel? Why not supply the URL instead of just making statements that can't be checked out.
# Posted By Bob Williams | 4/25/08 12:25 PM
Miguel's Gravatar It can easily be located. I found it (again) in less than 1 minute.

mike's Gravatar Miguel, I'm going to keep it and pay the $40. However, I only use it to make outgoing long distance calls. It's not going to replace my landline phone anytime soon, but it will pay for itself in 2 months on the LD side. In any case, it's a cool gadget to play around with and has caused no computer problems I'm aware of. My McAfee Security Center (latest version) found nothing wrong with the magicJack software or automatically eliminated any problems it found.

The only complaint I have so far is that people on the other end sometimes hear echoes and weird noises. I don't hear these; on my end the sound quality is very good.
# Posted By mike | 4/25/08 2:24 PM
barry's Gravatar i just wanted to add that you are right they are a bunch of Jack Offs.
i can't belive a company would treat their customers this way. i have been on the phone for 5 hrs this afternoon and the morons on the other end can't make good english. this is pathetic. i received it today it will be going back tomorrow. everything works fine except that every second, i mean every second you get a gap in the voice stream. its almost like a tick except there is no sound. don't delete the files they ask you to they are just stalling and giving you the run around. please don't buy this, save yourself!
# Posted By barry | 4/28/08 6:14 PM
barry's Gravatar sorry, i didn't mean the phone i've been sitting here staringat the computer screen waiting for replies with 10 min, no joke, 10 min delays before they wouold respond finally i told the last guy that it was customer no service(sorry stole that from clark) and disconnected. i am so pissed i wasted an afternoon. again don't buy it people!!!!!!!!
# Posted By barry | 4/28/08 6:18 PM
mike's Gravatar I've been using magicJack for 5 weeks now. (See previous posts.) I still don't know why many of you are having so many problems. Maybe it works better for me because I have a very fast internet connection - 2.4Mbps per the CNET Bandwidth Meter. I do have several gripes: 1) voicemail has been down for "maintenance" for 3 days now. Not a big deal to me because I mainly use the Jack for outgoing calls, 2) the person I call often hears ecoes or weird noises, and 3) the duplex quality (i.e., the ability of both callers to talk at the same time and still hear each other) is low.

Despite these problems, I still think it was well worth the 40 bucks, but it won't be replacing my landline phone.
# Posted By mike | 5/7/08 4:40 PM
Miguel's Gravatar It seems like a lot of MJ people are accepting a service that is BELOW what is being advertised. It puts the MJ company in a win-win position: the service might not work 100% but hey, it's only $40 what did you expect?! That is SO WRONG! What if you go get an oil/filter change and they use half new oil and half old oil, but give you a great price on it? Or what if you have a lawn service that only does 3/4 of your lawn but they give you a discount? How would you feel if you applied the same reasoning at the gas pump? Let's say gas is $3.50/gallon so you put in $7 but only get 1.75 gallons. Oh well, close enough to 2 I guess...

The SHADOW's Gravatar Majik-Jak is working the time /system port size game, if you get the "trial" you will have good service for at least 6 weeks from the time you install, after that time your "device" is "upgraded" with a new load that puts you on back side for QOS from switch, new user is on top this way they will be "happy" until end of the 30 day time frame.
Switch is limited since all is LEASED.

Good info on cleaning out MagicJAK-Off software, if you your check outgoing out bound streams you will see that software is "calling home" all brouser use site visits at least 3 times a day if you keep on 7/24.
info is sent out every time you make a call,
Very interesting info from the TigerJet SDK, this device is used in Asia and it costs $4.00 in 5K lots I wonder if we can do some thing better with them, got one to reg with my ast* switch using SDK (after clearing out the majic)

happy user so far's Gravatar forgot to say that i have installed the same MJ on 3 different computers, a 2001 compaq desktop, a 2 years old compaq laptop and a brand new dell. no problems at all on any of them.
works like a charm at least until now.

Mike Hickman's Gravatar As I can see either you are new and accept the fact it will work as promised, that you had it for a few weeks and sending it back or you kept it past the 'trial period' of 30 days and feel the same, it sucks as it gord slong and their promise is the BIG SUCK!!!

The problem is that all their 'fixes' don't fix nothin'. Their customer service also sucks with a bunch of head cases who can't, don't, won't read what you send them in the 'live help' who just follow a book and tell you the same stupid stuff over and over.

One person told me that what I have stated will be in the computer for the next person to read. Bull---- because they haven't a clue. No stupivisor on site, the are a free phone service but have no number for you to call, don't care about your situation and have no answers at all.

They told me on one session that I needed a plug-in USB unit (ac power) because a regular one doesn't do well. No matter where I plug in, direct to my computer, USS or powered USB still the same. Even upgraded Comcast (yeah, sorry) to 12 down and 2 up, same junk. It works, doesn't work, restart it five or six times a day, come home it's out, no dial tone, even people tell me they call and get nothing.

It always seems their pat answer is, "we're upgrading, call back tomorrow" because the asshole on line doesn't know what is where.

So if you just bought it, send it back. If you had it over 30 days like me, tough shit because you will find that it works at times and most times it doesn't.

I tell everyone I see, don't even try it because it screws with your computer, your head and your wallet. They have a very long way to go to even be worth the $47.00 so for those who say, hey it's on $20.00 I ask, "Where did you get a free unit?"

Uncle Lonnie's Gravatar Hey, I just wasted the whole afternoon dealing with these shysters.

Couldnt get it to work. Got a person called called "Debbie" in a computer chat to help me to walk me through. That was a joke.

I asked them if I could call them to speed things up and even offered to give them my cell number for them to call me. They never did. ( I guess their Magic Jack did not work on their end either)

When I ordered it from a TV add from their 800 number it was all voice mail. No real person to talk to or to ask questons of.

That was a red flag but I ignored it. (You gotta suspect a free phone deal where there is only a computer voice mail on the other end when you call their 800 number)

BTW, if you want a refund you need to get a refund number from the company before you ship it back. They want your Email and your credit card number to give you the refund number.
# Posted By Uncle Lonnie | 6/13/08 4:36 PM
Uncle Lonnie's Gravatar And when you try to get a return number to authorize your returning the Magic Junk they ask for your CC number and the page where you type your CC number is not protected!

What an idiot outfit.

I hope I did not get some hidden virus or worm when I installed their product.
# Posted By Uncle Lonnie | 6/13/08 4:40 PM
allcolor's Gravatar I think that this post is supported by vonage or others compititors. I think eithe with verizon, comcast long distance there are a lot of problems when you make long distance call. I use it for 5 month now, I use from europ and in USA and Canada it works for me very well.

$39 is no thing for me for this 5 months. if a Use phone cards or an other long distance provider it will cost more .

I love this product, it s realy a magic product. may be there some jalous people hwo doesnt like others to get payed for there work.

any way I will not uninsttal it . and pay 6$ monthly fee, plus 0.09cents/ minute to call europ or long distance . noway.

CLK Group's Gravatar I first learned about Magic Jack in a news article and then went to their website. Researching further I came across forums such as this one.

In the end I decided to order one to try. I run Windows Vista.

It arrived in about 5 days. I unpacked it and followed the directions, plugging it into one of my USB ports - nothing. I then tried another port. This time the blue light came on but no functionality. Tried a third USB port and it started.
Finished the installation (ran the Vista upgrade) and tried a few calls. It worked OK, one call had static, another could not hear me clearly.

The next day when I 'woke' my system Magic Jack did not run. Unplugged it and plugged it back in. It then started OK. I went to the Magic Jack website and ran the 'Fix-It' program which is basically just a compatibility check. It told me all was OK. Later in the day I had the same problem with Magic Jack not working. This time I had to re-start my system. It still would not work. Only by unplugging it and then plugging it back in could I get it to work.

The following day both Internet Explorer and my email programs started to become unresponsive. I unplugged Magic Jack and restarted my system. I then plugged Magic Jack back in and it started OK. The phone calls I made did work fine with only a bit of static on some lines.

The third day I again started to have my programs become unresponsive. I again repeated yesterday's steps to get it working. This time I decided to contact Support through their 'Live chat' feature. After explaining the issues I was having, the agent instructed me to unplug Magic Jack, disable my firewall and anti-virus, and then plug it back in. It started and I resumed both my antivirus and firewall protection.

The fourth day I again started to have my programs become unresponsive. I unplugged Magic Jack, restarted my system and went to their website to return the product - I had had enough. I selected the link for 'Returns' and it took me to the 'Fix-It' program. This time, about 3/4 through the check, my browser stopped working completely. I had to re-launch it and go back through the steps. I did this three times and each time I got to the same part of the 'Fix-It' program, it would cause Internet Explorer to stop working completely. The next time, I decided to reach the Live Chat support. I managed to by-pass the 'Fix-It' program and connect with a support agent.
I told him what was happening and asked for instructions on how to return Magic Jack. He provided a link for Returns - the minute I selected it I was put back into the 'Fix-It' program which again caused my browser to stop and of course, end the session.

I again connected with a support agent, explaining what just happened, and again asked for the return procedure. This time he gave me a different link which took me to an RMA form, already pre-printed with my information with instructions to Print and return in two weeks in order for my card to not be charged.

In conclusion, Magic Jack may work well for a lot of people but they clearly have software compatibility issues with Windows Vista.

Dube Beez's Gravatar Thanks a bunch for posting how to uninstall. Magic Jack did not work well for me at all. Intall went fine and I happily gave a few people my new number(i had not cancelled vonage yet). No one could get to me without calling many time and they said they went straight to voicemail. Voicemail was not user friendly on either end! The static and crackling was terrible. I was no aware I would not have a phone when my computer was off. I will continue to use Voange without any issues at all for over 2 year now.

Laura's Gravatar I'm glad it works for some people, but it didn't at all for me. I ran fixws, the vista upgrade for vista, nothing worked. I tried to get to customer service via the "live" chat, but was sent back to FAQ's. I got so frustated I sent it back. I received an e-mail saying they received it. I tried to reply to ask how to unistall since that was not in the FAQ's, and it bounced back with "This email address has been discontinued. Please click here to contact support. We have upgraded our system to better serve you. We greatly appreciate your interest in magicJack." That just sent me back to the same site with FAQ's and live chat, which no longer seems to work. I can't belive there is no way to talk to anyone in this company anymore. I'm keeping an eye on my charge statement to make sure I'm not charged.(I had the 30 day trial) I don't trust this company at all! My computer, (which is new!!) is now totally screwed up!

zegway's Gravatar Dont know what Igniteme is talking about MJ making money off people that have to call him long distance because they dont have his hick-ass area code. What are you saying? Do you understand how anything works? Damn youre ignorant! Most people have free long distance these days anyway. If you don't then youre getting ripped off! Cable co. phones all have free LD (except stupid COX) and vonage is free LD from $15 a month... and land lines have free LD if you get the package deal. Wake up people !

I have it, and have no problems with it. Sucks that the PC has to be on, but otherwise it works as advertised. I don't know what all you cry babies are really talking about. It came in a few days, worked right out of the box. Most of you posting here are probably not very tech savvy and your PCs were messed up to begin with (because you don't know what the hell youre doing). Good luck to you. MAGIC JACK RULES !

Joe's Gravatar This product messed me up good. I put the number on my business cards and left it as a call back number for countless clients. The thing just died on me. I can't seem to get a refund. Go to the BBB site where you can see tons of complaints. Don't buy one!
# Posted By Joe | 8/5/08 11:52 AM
lisa's Gravatar I agree! DON'T BUY! The customer service is RUDE beyond words. They REFUSE to credit me my shipping cost to send it back,
which is false advertisement! If anyone has seen the recent Television spots, they guarantee that you will keep your number for life,
but in the terms and agreement, they can change whenever and as often as they like, it also states that they can sell your personal info to anyone
in the world, but the customer service guarantees that would never happen, then why is it in writing that they can? The terms and agreement also
state they can change the terms and agreement whenever they want, so why bother signing it? The only way to conact the "customer service" is
through chat, and the only way to get a proof of your chat is to click an icon in the chat window and it will be e-mailed to you, well out of all of the chats
I had, it only worked once. I asked to have the chats e-mailed to me, they refuse that as well. I have a complaint into the FCC for the false advertisment
for the shipping charges! And they LOVE to hang up on you. Do I sound frusterated? If I could cuss, I would! I found in they were to issue a add/remove
program, which is NOT there! Which is why I am here. So thank you for the help because the magicjack people are of NO help what so ever. I also,
e-mailed every company that they have on their web page, letting them know that the majicjack is has been fale advertising, and I would think
they would not want their companies associated with GARBAGE!!!!!!!! Although it only cost me 5.00 to ship it back, that is not the point, they
PROMISED in the TV spot they would "even pay for the postage to send it back" LIARS!!!!

lisa's Gravatar This is for the person who did a destructive recovery, ignore if you have already fixed. I assume you are using Windows XP, What you need is your operating system cd and your driver cd's. If you actually did a destructive recovery you would have nothing. A destructive recovery reformats the hard drive. You need to reinstall you OS, then reinstall your drivers. Then of course go through the fun of retreiving all of the updates that are out there. If you do not have the CD's you should be able to get them for a fee, from your manufacturer. I have an hp and it if fairly easy to do. Your manufacturers web site should have instructions on how to perform the recovery to get you up and running. Hope this helps.
# Posted By lisa | 8/15/08 12:40 PM
lisa's Gravatar Oh, my god, I just chatted with them for another hour! I was litterly quoting what the tv ad states as I was WATCHING it while chatting, and they still REFUSE to honor the promise to pay for the shiping back! They REFUSE to give me a phone number where you can talk to a real person! Thanks for the tip to print, I was on my lap top wireless, and not hooked up to a printer, but found I could print a .tiff file which will be helpful in my case with the FCC and the BBB. These people should be in jail. Anyone who buys this item is going to regret it! If you have any problems, GOOD LUCK trying to comminicate with them because they do not knmow the meaning of CUSTOMER SERVICE. The odd part about this chat, is she came close to admitting that I am due a refund. But then she stopped herself and started giving yes, no answers. I WISH I saw this site BEFORE I ordered it!!!!! Like I said, if it seems to good to be true.........I can honestly say, I hate those people. HATE!!!
